Introduction
For this product, I wanted to know more about my family history and introduce my culture to my classmates. I'll be honest, my nationality isn't very well known amongst my peers. I am not Japanese, Chinese, Korean or Vietnamese. I am Laotian.
Starting Point
I started the project knowing what I wanted to already do. For my art portion, I wanted to create a menu that shows Lao cuisine and it's neighboring cultures inspired dishes/drinks with traditional symbols making it pleasing to the eye. And for my english, I wanted to create a short story by conducting an interview with my grandparent(s) from both sides and giving it first person view but instead I was telling the story as if I was in it.
Creating the Menu
First, I created the menu off of Pages -- an app used to create documents, resumes', etc. I started off with something simple and used one of the layouts that it already had, giving myself a general idea on how I would like to set up my menu. For the food items, I based on dishes/drinks that the most people would have known about like eggrolls and Thai iced tea and for the other items, I based it on a dessert that no one had probably known of and for the drink, it was basically a parallel of the Thai iced tea.

Before I edit my menu, I met up with Mr. Grandi -- The Art teacher of Apollo. We discussed the menu and how I could improve it, making it more like an authentic Asian restaurant menu. And with the description of the items, Mr Grandi suggest I meet up with Mr. Ward to take suggestion on what direction on how I can describe the products.
After my quick meetings with the teachers of Apollo, I edited my menu. I added traditional symbols, edited the description of the products, and how I wanted to introduce my culture's culinary creations. One last meeting with Mr. Grandi and with a few adjustments of the traditional symbols and order of the content. I finally created a menu I was satisfied with. |
Interview
Before I introduce my nationality to others, I wanted to learn more about my family history and how/why they decided to come to the States. I interview my grandfather, Sisavath Ketsatha who is currently a pastor of his own church. I learned the sacrifices he made and how he decided to fight back against communism.
