This project pretty much began when I found George Carlin. George Carlin pretty much just straight up made me an atheist. I mean, I never really believed in god, but when I was younger I told myself I did just in case I was wrong I could get into heaven. But George made me completely sure and comfortable with being an atheist.
So I just wanted to learn about religion as much as possible with this project.

I read the book "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. As I read I annotated the text and wrote down questions I had. After I finished reading, I answered these questions in my own analysis of the book.
I really enjoyed this book. I learned a lot of great things from it. Dawkins does a great job making you look at things from all angles, and he uses logic that can't be argued with.

ART
I made three different paintings that were really two different works that went together. First I wanted to paint the point of view of a religious person in my opinion. When I thought about what it would be like to be a religious person, I thought of how stressful it would be to be always wondering whether you were going to have eternal bliss upstairs or eternal damnation and torture downstairs. So I painted hell (a bunch a fire) and heaven (a circular beam of light) and did this with them.
Then I wanted to do a painting of the perspective of an atheist. So I cut a long thin sheet of paper and painted some landscape of Earth. Then I folded it into a cylinder and stapled it together.
So the point of this was to show that religious people are very worried about what's going on above and below them, while atheist are free to focus on what's going on right in front of them.
Then I made a collage of photos that all had little different meanings.
This one is showing wars and events that happened largely do to religion. The person is surrounded by these things. They are also surrounded by darkness and their hands are held out asking "why?"
This is Jerry Falwell. He was a preacher who once said AIDS and 9/11 were God's punishment for gay people. He also said that the purple teletubby was teaching children the gay lifestyle.
This section is supposed to represent the sexual abuse within the Catholic church. The priest in the center of the picture covered up for a priest who molested many children. The altar boys behind him have their faces blurred out. The virgin Mary is crying.
This is showing god as he watches over all of the people that he drowned when he drowned the entire human population, except Noah and his family.
This is showing the story of betrayal and hypocricy that is Malcolm X's life. Malcolm gave his entire life to Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam. Then he found out that Elijah had children with multiple different sisters, breaking many of the rules of the Nation, when Elijah was supposed to be the prophet for Allah. When Malcolm broke away, he was killed by the Nation of Islam.
This is showing a burglar breaking into someone's home. The man is praying that everything will be okay. Ironically, the burglar is wearing a crucifix. Who's side is God on?

I interviewed a Christian, Catholic, Jew, Hindu, agnostic, and atheist. I basically just wanted to know a little about their religion and why they believed what they did. This was the first time I have done a recorded interview with two cameras and two different mics, so it was definitely a learning experience. I've never learned how to do something like this so I was teaching myself and getting better as I went along. The editing process of matching up the audio with the video and cutting back and fourth between cameras was tough too.
