The Idea
This was my first project in Apollo and I had no idea what I wanted to do for it. I had no clue where I should even start. Since I chose to only take English and Art, I decide I was just going to go to Mr. Ward and ask him to give me a book. He gave me a few options and I chose The Catcher in the Rye. In a normal English class, if a teacher gives you a book to read, you usually have to do something like write a report on it. However, Apollo allows me to take the book and do whatever I want with it. This opened me up to a whole new world of options.
The English Aspect
As I read the book, I took notes on each chapter. I made sure to keep track of where the main character, Holden, was and how his surroundings and environment affected his emotions. I also took note of his interactions with other characters. As I read the book, I realized how Holden felt like an outcast from his family and society in general. I then wrote a poem that displayed these emotions. I have included the poem below.
The Runt
All his siblings are running off to go play
The same way they have every other day
He sits in the corner and watches them from afar
No one notices that he is missing
He always gets trampled over when it's time to eat
So he walks away and is very discrete
He'll wait very patiently, to eat the small portion left
No one realizes that he doesn't eat with them
He decides to try to join in on all the fun
He tries to follow along however he cannot run
His legs are too weak and he could not keep up
No one notices that he is missing
All his siblings are running off to go play
The same way they have every other day
He sits in the corner and watches them from afar
No one notices that he is missing
He always gets trampled over when it's time to eat
So he walks away and is very discrete
He'll wait very patiently, to eat the small portion left
No one realizes that he doesn't eat with them
He decides to try to join in on all the fun
He tries to follow along however he cannot run
His legs are too weak and he could not keep up
No one notices that he is missing
The Art Aspect
For my art piece I created a map. This map pinpointed all of the places that Holden went to throughout Manhattan. The shade of blue reflected his emotional state throughout his journey. The red strings accented the piece and brought it to life more. Overall, I was very happy with how the art piece turned out. Below I have included some pictures.
