Trip To Chincoteague
Reason Behind Plans
For my first summer with my license I’ve decided to plan a trip with my brother and friend to my grandparents who live in Chincoteague Island Virginia. But I wanted it to different instead of the same long drive down. What I decided was to add a few stops along the way for some fun. I’ve made a plan explaining each stop and added some history behind a few stops and the Island.

First stop
Catonsville Baltimore
I’ve decided for my first stop to be in Catonsville Baltimore right off of Interstate 695 on to route 144. I chose here because of a store called Objects Found. Objects Found is a cool store full of old collectors items, like old Grandfather and Grandmother clocks, old lamps, and old kitchenware sets, so I thought it would be pretty cool to check out. I feel my friend and brother would find this place interesting too. This place is also open till 6-7 pm depending on the day we leave this should be plenty of time for us to get there.

Second stop
Marley Station
The second stop I’ve chose was the Marley Station, which is a mall in Glen Burnie. This mall opened in 1987 and expanded twice in 1993 and 1997. I feel this would be a good place to get out, grab something to eat and walk around a little before the long ride to the bridge. I know my friend loves to spend his money and get souvenirs so I know he will enjoy it. But I also would like to check it out and see a different mall then the one we have in York. My brother I feel will enjoy the stop too.

Third stop
Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Here at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge will be a quick stop. It will be for pictures and bathroom break. But I also feel it would nice stop and check it out instead of just driving over it. It would be cool to see the views and see what is really getting us across the ocean. The bridge was established in July 30, 1952, the eastbound part. But June 28, 1973, the westbound part was built.

Finale stop
Dairy queen
The rest of the way will be a straight drive due to assuming it will be getting dark. But I also know that we will pass a Dairy Queen somewhere along the rest of the way, we can stop at like we always do. I know I’ll get the Fudge Brownie blizzard because it’s my favorite. My brother will get the Mint Oreo Blizzard like always and my friend will most likely get same because that’s what he likes.

History Behind the Island
NASA Flight Facility in Chincoteague Virginia wasn't always that. U.S. Navy Auxiliary Air Station occupied it in 1943. Just two Years after World War II started. The Navy established two small post on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. One at Accomac and the other at Chincoteague. George HW Bush was trained at this Naval Base. In 1959, NASA took over the Naval Auxiliary Air Station Chincoteague. So engineering and administrative activities were done here. In 1981 the NASA station was named Goddard Space Flight Center.
When research at Wallops was started it was all about obtaining aerodynamic data at transonic and low supersonic speeds. Project Mercury capsules were tested here between 1959 and 1961. The first launch into orbit from Wallops NASA was Explorer IX on February 15, 1961. The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explore was launched from Wallops atop a Minotaur V rocket. The first time launched anywhere else but Florida.
NASA for the past Five Years have been dealing with beach erosion of 10 to 20 feet due to Current sea level rise. A permanent ground control station for NASA’s RQ-4 Global ( Surveillance UAV) Hawk drone is at Wallops Flight Facility.
